The CRA Winter League races over the winter season measure each crews and clubs improvement with races taking place in January, February and March. Out of the three races rowers experienced some of the coldest temperatures for 2018 battling snow and strong wind in December and March. Despite the challenging conditions Cambridge ’99 managed to dominate the river Cam with the Men’s first 8+ boat consistently maintaining the lead across all three months to come away with a combined fastest time of 27:53.2 minutes, beating competition from Cantabrigian and City rowing clubs. This makes them the fastest boat on the river Cam! The crew consisted of Karel Kabelik, Rob Sargent, Alex Shaw, Will Young, Rhidian Maltby, Friso van Gent, Nick Thorn, Nick Richardson, coxed by Sammi Tarling and coached by Mark Hanman. Over all, Cambridge ’99 came away from the final leg of the Winter League races with 7 crews winning their category including, Nick Thorn in the Club A Single Sculls, Ben Champion in the Men’s Novice Single Sculls and Karel Kabelik and Will Young in the Men's Championship Pair. The Women’s squad performed well coming in second place for the Women’s 4+ Club A category missing out on a win by 5 seconds. The crew consisted of Josie Harries, Sara Bastiani, Agnus Bolinska, Valentina Futoryanova, coxed by Sebb Hathaway and coached by Mike Taylor. The endurance and performance of the crews and club during the Winter League races, through incredibly cold conditions provided a great end to the winter season. The club looks forward to continuing its successes into the Regatta season.
