The Captains
Will began rowing only 3 years ago and instantly fell in love with the sport. After rising through all the different squads at 99s, starting in M4 where they beat M2 at HoRR, then managing to get into the Henley boat that same year.
You will find Will leading from the front in the erg sessions and generally rallying the squad to push their physical limits and become the best rowers they can be.
Keith is said to bleed blue, Keith has been leading the club for many years and is currently filling in all the volunteerary roles that he can.
You will find Keith at the boathouse most days, either out on the river teaching the learn to row course, or organising the members to help the club be the amazing place it is.
Hashabiah (also known as Shabs) is in her second season as Women’s Captain and hails from the far-off land of New Zealand. After a year as Vice Captain, she led the squad to a major milestone by qualifying an 8+ for Henley Women’s Regatta for the first time in a decade.
She’s at the boathouse so often, some say she should start paying rent. Whether she’s rowing, coxing, smashing a land session, or hyping the squad with a top-tier playlist, Shabs brings serious energy and commitment. She’s all about fast boats, strong team vibes, and making sure every session counts, while having a good time along the way.
Chloe learnt to cox here in Cambridge at Emmanuel Boat Club. After a few years off the river, she couldn’t resist coming back to coxing when she moved into a flat which was 1 minute away from the boathouse. Since joining Nines she has kept the Mens Squad on it from the coxes seat, racing at Henley Royal Regatta for the first time, and she learnt to row with the Progression squad, rowing in the Fearsome Coxtopus coxes crew for Town Bumps.
You may struggle to spot Chloe out on the river since she is normally wearing lots of layers tucked in at the front of a bowloader 4+, but you will sometimes see her out on the bank coaching learner coxes.
Having rowing in the family meant that it was inevitable that Katy would become involved one way or another. Now in her third season of looking after the Progression Squad, she is always to be found at the Boathouse, rowing, coaching….or supporting the PS boats from the towpath.
With an impressive six boats rowing in Town Bumps last year, Katy has a great season of training and racing planned for PS ready to build a PS fleet for 2026!
The Coaches
Andrew has been at the heart of 99s for years, involved in nearly every corner of the club. After joining the men’s squad and serving as Men’s Captain for two years, he now sits on the board as a Director, helping guide the club’s future.
As a Senior Coach, he’s developed countless rowers from the progression squad into the senior ranks (including the current Men’s Captain) and now brings his wealth of experience to the women’s high-performance squad. Andrew also leads the club’s data analysis and telemetry work, helping to bring a modern, evidence-based approach to coaching across the squads.
Christian has been dedicated to coaching crews since 2020, with a focus on technical development. He works closely with both the men's and women's squads, specializing in technical development in small boats. His coaching impact extends beyond the core program, as he also works with the Churchill College Boat Club and occasionally assists other rowing clubs in Cambridge.
Christian led crews to compete at premier regattas, including Henley Royal Regatta and Henley Women's Regatta. His crews won gold medals at the British Masters in 2021 and 2023, and at Henley Masters Regatta in 2023. More locally, Christian coached Churchill's students to winning blades during the 2024 College Bumps races. Perhaps most notably, Christian's work provides a pathway to the highest level of university rowing, with several of his student athletes going on to compete with the Cambridge University Boat Club and represent Cambridge in The Boat Race.
With a passion for developing both the mind and body of every athlete, Charlotte brings a thoughtful, athlete-focused coaching style. She focuses on asking the right questions, challenging her athletes to think critically and develop their “rowing IQ,” helping them understand not just what to do, but why. Believing that true growth comes from understanding.
By empowering athletes to take ownership for themselves, Charlotte builds awareness of technique, performance, and the connection between body and boat. This approach accelerates learning, fosters confidence, and helps rowers internalise what “good” feels like, leading to sustainable improvement.
Her coaching philosophy centers on curiosity, self-discovery, and excellence whether refining stroke technique, improving conditioning, or cultivating mental resilience.
