Coxes at Nines are a huge part of the success of the club, supporting our squads in their training and races. On such a twisty, busy river, our coxes are cool, calm and collected and bring the best lines to make sure that Nines crews get the most out of every training session and race.
Coxing at Nines is centrally organised across our rowing squads, meaning that coxes have the opportunity to get involved with different squads and crews for race campaigns and to work with different athletes and coaches in training sessions.
The Coxes Captain and coaches support every cox at Nines to ensure that they can work towards their personal development goals. We have a sign-off structure so that coxes can become proficient coxing and racing in different boat classes, starting from beginner coxes right the way through to our senior coxes racing in our top class Hudson VIIIs and bowloaded IVs.
Beginner Cox
We have a learn to cox programme which can support you from your first session in the tub to confidently coxing sessions with our squads. If you are completely new to rowing, we encourage you to complete our Learn to Row course to learn the foundations and you will have the opportunity to try coxing as part of the course.

Intermediate Cox
You may be part of our intermediate coxes group if:
You have completed the Learn to Cox programme
You are an experienced rower familiar and are now learning to cox
You have learnt to cox elsewhere but are not familiar with navigating on the Cam
All of our intermediate coxes are supported by coaches & bank parties until they are confident navigating the river & running a session independently. At that point, we run a sign-off assessment to confirm your proficiency and you will be signed-off to run sessions in that boat class without the supervision of a bank party.
Senior Cox
Senior coxes at Nines are confident running sessions and racing in sternloaded shells. They may begin racing on the Cam at first, and then travel to race in other local and national races with our Senior Squad.
They work with our squad coaches towards the training goals for the crew and their own personal development goals. Senior coxes can progress to training and racing in bowloaded shells when they are confident navigating the Cam and can start to work with a crew through boat feel.
Depending on training commitment, racing skills and our selection process, the top senior coxes will support our performance crews racing at national races like Womens & Eights Head of the River and Henley Women’s & Royal Regatta.
We are always open to new coxes joining our club. If you're an intermediate or senior cox looking to develop your skills as part of a friendly, competitive club, get in touch with the Coxes Captain.
